Greetings from Mozambique! My team and I left the states 3 days ago, and what an adventure we’ve already had. Starting with a 10 hour flight to Istanbul, where we had a 10 hour layover, leading to a 10 hour flight to Johannesburg, followed by an 8 hour drive to Mozambique.
We spent our first night in Mozambique at one of our teams ministry sites, Beacon of Hope, whose goal is to raise up boys to be men of Christ. When we arrived, sometime after midnight, we were enthusiastically greeted by the founder of the organization who had dinner and cake prepared for all 47 members of our squad. What a blessing!
After a night of 4 hours of sleep, we packed up our bags and each team headed out to their ministry site. My team, partnered with another team from my squad (Team Deep Wells), drove to Maputo where we are staying at the home of the people who founded Africa on Fire. This is an organization that started 5 years ago in South Africa planting churches. They have a large plot of land in Chibuto where they are currently building the first 2 of 12 orphanages, as well as a school.
We will head out to Chibuto on Monday to serve with Africa on Fire where we will spend 3 weeks doing ministry. Week one will be spent playing with local kids during the day and doing village ministry and evangelism in the evenings, as well as helping with any various needs that arise during this time. During week two, my team and I will be doing crusades. Week three’s ministry will look similar to week one. Although we have a general idea of what our time in Mozambique will look like, it’s very possible that our ministry will change.
Although we’ve been spending days traveling and have spent little time processing, I can say with absolute certainty that my team and I are right where we need to be. God has been so good a gracious to us throughout our traveling, whether it’s through the kind people we meet, the ease of border crossing, or the time we’ve been given to catch up on some sleep. After experiencing a bit of the culture, we are so excited to begin ministering to the beautiful people in Mozambique.
One last thing: We have a route change! Malaysia has been added to our route! We will be spending 2 weeks here after we leave Madagascar, so instead of traveling to 11 countries, we will be visiting 12! This will not extend the length of our trip, we will just be spending a little less time in Madagascar and China.
I will not have running water, electricity, or wifi, but I will keep you updated as I can. Thanks to everyone who has loved and supported me through this venture!
