Eleven months are spent traveling around the world, experiencing many different cultures, and spending a lot of time with your new family. One of these months is called “ministry.” One month of this journey is set aside for the men of the squad to spend some quality time together doing manly things. What exactly does this mean? We spent a few days in Bangkok, Thailand before being sent to Kanchanaburi by our contacts at YWAM. We were told that we needed to pack light because there would not be much space in the van taking us four hours away. When we got there we were shown were we would be sleeping. It was a huge concrete slab with a roof over it. We spent the next few minutes setting up what was to be our home for the next three weeks.

The day we arrived was also the start of an annual festival they have in Thailand. During these few days it is impossible to go anywhere without having water sprayed or poured on you. All eleven of us guys would ride in the back of our contact’s truck. He would come to a stop each time he seen someone waiting on the side of the road to wet people passing by. Our contact didn’t mind it, because he was inside the cab were he would stay dry. But being on the back of the truck, we were never able to get to our destination with a dry piece of clothing on our body.

We spent the first few days cutting up banana trees for the cows to eat. This month is really dry, so there is no grass for the cows to feed on. Most of our month will be doing this and some more manual labor. We also have a concrete slab to pour in the floor of a halfway constructed house. Besides spending most of our time being hot and sweaty, we are getting to spend some time together with just us guys. It’s nice to just have time to ourselves. We get to share with each other what is on each of our hearts that we can’t always share with the women.
