I’ve been really lazy lately about spending time with the Lord. I’ve gotten into a funk where I barely even pray during the day, let alone sit down and spend time in the Word just listening to God. It’s not that I don’t have time – I definitely have time right now – I just fill my time with other things (ahem, Netflix).

But the craziest thing happened today. A squad mate posted a prayer request on Facebook, and I thought to myself, “Oh, I should pray for her later.”

Then it hit me.

Why later? Why do I always have to “pray later?” Why can’t I pray right now?

So I decided to stop whatever I was doing and pray for her right then and there. In that moment, I felt a connection to the Lord that I had been deeply missing lately. It’s like I was reminded that God is there, all the time, wanting to talk to me, listen to me, and just spend time with me.

I think I fall into the trap of thinking that I only need to pray when I’m intentionally spending time with the Lord. I often think that I have to cram all my prayers for the day in the hour or so that I spend with Jesus in the morning.

The problem with this is that when, like me, you aren’t spending time with Jesus in the morning – or any point in the day – there’s no communication, no connection.

Jesus tells us to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thes 5:17). I don’t think he meant pray without ceasing only in the morning when your Bible is open in front of you, or when you’re doing a “good job” at having quiet time. He meant pray all the time, throughout the day, when you’re making a decision (big or small), when you don’t know what to say, when you don’t know what to do, when you’re happy, when you’re sad, when you’re out of patience, when you want to slam on your brakes to teach the guy that’s tailing you a lesson (No? Just me?).

The point is, our Father wants us to talk to Him. He’s waiting. And when we do, He will do powerful things in and through us.
