Every Monday and Thursday a remnant of one of the teams travels with Lucas to the market to get fruits and veggies for the next 4 days. Shopping for 15+ people is a long process. We do not have refrigeration so meat purchases are done separately on the day of. We have yet to spend less than 4 hours shopping on a market day but the fruit is the best I have ever tasted. The avocados are like tipped softballs and run about 12 cents each.
Last market day Jer, Jen, and I accompanied Lucas to the market. Lucas walked us from vendor to vendor explaining the route by which we would buy our produce, stopping to talk to people he knew all along the way. We met a woman and her daughter who had most of what we were looking to buy at good prices. They were very friendly and asked me to take pictures of them and then wanted the pictures, it is hard to explain a digital camera with a language barrier but they seemed pleased enough to be shown the pictures. As we stood before their blanket, a very cute little girl of about 3 proudly marched up and grabbed Jeremiah’s hand, I teased him that he may have found himself a future wife. After negotiating prices and amounts for potatoes which they call Irish, tomatoes, garlic, onions, carrots and cabbages we walked away with 750 shillings worth of food, which was a chore to carry. Lucas and Jer each carried a handle for the potato bag since it was so heavy. I put the tomatoes, garlic and carrots in my backpack and Jen carried the rest. We waddled our way to the super market where we bought African peanut butter , water and some other random items.
