I’ve grown up with the idea that monkeys are cute little animals living simple lives, climbing trees and eating bananas for a living.
I mean, who doesn’t love Curious George?

In India, monkeys are as common as dogs in the streets.  Except these aren’t the cute Curious George types.  We’ve been told to avoid them because they are mean and will bite.  They roam around on the rooftops like they own the places.  The flat roofs here are used as places to hang clothes to dry, play areas for children, and a place to enjoy the cooler air once the sun goes down.

I've gotten in the routine of getting up at 6:30 and spending awhile on our roof having quiet time and a workout before breakfast. This morning I was walking upstairs- an outside staircase- and I saw some monkeys on the buildings across from our apartment- about 12 or 15 of them, and some with babies.

see a great photo opportunity so I pull out my camera- I've learned to never go anywhere without it- being careful not to make a disturbance.  I also took a video in which several started fighting and it turned out to be pretty sweet footage. I snapped a few pics, no big deal.

Continue on my way up the stairs.  When I turned the corner there is a monkey climbing over the railing, only two feet from me, teeth bared, making an awful hissing noise!!!

I FROZE!  I had no idea what to do! Snakes, bears, angry dogs, dealt with them, know what to do.
What do you do with monkeys?! Run? Yell at it? Hit/kick? Beat it to the ground?

None of the above in this situation.
I SCREAMED SO loudly!!! Not my proudest moment. I haven't screamed like that since I was a little kid! I think I probably scared it because it backed away for a second. I'm sure the whole neighborhood heard me. A neighbor man came running, yelling at it from the ground below.  Another man came out of his apartment with a broom to chase it off.  I ran back downstairs to the safety of our apartment my heart racing faster than if I'd just had my morning workout!

How's that for a morning wake up in India?

So, just know that this video and pictures came at great cost!  Too bad I wasn’t videoing when I monkey jumped in front of me surprise
