A couple of nights ago Noemi – a mom we have known of years – appeals to us with tears streaming down her face, “Help my son Ronnie!” Immediately we sympathized with her as we could sense part of her anguished pain: A mom pleading for the life of her eighteen year old son.
Ronnie has a loving mom, two beautiful younger sisters and a good-hearted younger brother. He has a simple home – minus such things as lights and running water – where a bed and food is available. But Ronnie chooses the streets daily. We see Ronnie almost everyday high by inhaling paint thinner. Ronnie carries around a plastic pistol in his backpack assaulting strangers on the street to supply his next high. This is Ronnie today!
One year ago, I met Ronnie. He was sitting – crouched over – with a dripping rag of paint thinner plastered to his face. He looked at me with blood-shot eyes. I asked him if he wanted to help me by carrying 50 pound bags of cement to a nearby project. He staggered up and helped me until all 20 bags were at the site desired.
Day by day we found Ronnie at the site waiting for us – crouched over, blood-shot eyes and the same wet rag plastered to his face. But he was there! One day we asked him if he wanted a break from the streets by spending some time with us at our property. He answered only by a simple nod and smile.
Ronnie ended up staying on our property for one month with a group of missionaries from World Race. Every day we were witnessing RADICALLY CHANGES in Ronnie’s life! He stopped getting high. He read the Bible for hours everyday. He re-entered Los Pinos – not looking for the next high but to share simple Bible stories with the younger children of the streets. Daily he proudly told us, “I want to be a Pastor!” RADICAL CHANGES!
As time marched forward Ronnie slowly regressed back to the drab streets. For the past year we continued to sadly witness this young man’s life deteriorating on the streets. Everytime we had the opportunity we would demonstrate our love to him through patience, compassion, love and having personal conversations with him about life.
Six days ago, we and his entire family confronted him about his problems. He began to cry begging God to help him to RADICALLY CHANGE his life. Two days later he stood in front of our church proclaiming – to everyone – his problems and how he wants to RADICALLY CHANGE his life. For the last four days Ronnie continues to live with us – CLEAN from drugs. In these four days we continue to re-witness RADICAL CHANGES in Ronnie’s life. Today he said, “My Mom is really happy.” I asked, “Why?” He smiled and responded, “I am CHANGING my life!”

On Monday, we have all agreed – including Ronnie – to place him in a three-month drug rehabilitation program called 24 Hours. This seventy-year old program continues to assist, counsel and prepare men from the streets for a better life.
After Ronnie graduates he has agreed to join the military. The military will offer him schooling and vocational training. Furthermore, Ronnie will learn respect, discipline and responsibility.
