Why do it

“You called me out upon the waters, the great unknown, where feet may fail. And there I find you in the mystery, in oceans deep, my faith will stand. And I will call upon your name, and keep my eyes above the waves, when oceans rise, my soul will rest in your embrace, for I am yours, and you are mine”.

“Why did I sign up for this trip, is this where God really wants me to be, what does God want me to do, and what am I going to do after this is all over?” These are the top most asked questions by this missionary who just signed up to leave his/her family, leave his/her friends and life for a year. American society says that once someone graduates from high school they have three options: One; go to college, Two; join the military, and Three; join the work force. Society could look down upon someone if he/she said “No, I’m going to break the norm and do something else, I’m going to leave you all behind, travel the world, I need your support, oh, and I need money.” But here’s the thing; the Bible says to go and spread his (God’s) word to all nations, baptizing them in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Who cares what others say, who cares what others think, if God and the Bible are telling me to do something, I better do it. In the end we will be rewarded for what we have done in our lives and we will be also punished for the things we haven’t done in our lives.

Some of My Favorite Things

Worship. The Half Dozen Disciples (the team I am on) have decided to do worship every night. I am the worship leader and I play the guitar. We give the option to the other groups to join or not. Most everybody joins our worship sessions, and during these sessions it can get crazy. People like to sing super loud, scream, cry, fall on their faces, or throw their hands in the air. I tend to just play random chords and my hands start to hurt like crazy. But this is all for God. It does not matter how we act during worship as long as we are worshiping God.

Teaching. We have been lucky these past couple of days to have the opportunity to teach English, which I said I would never do. But to be honest I actually liked it a lot! The class I had in the morning was kids who were five and six. We learned the colors and body parts. In the afternoon I taught a class of students who were in seventh grade. With them we learned phrases such as “Hello my name is..”

Widows. Our ministry in Guatemala has a lot to do with serving the widows here. We give them food such as corn and rice, or we give them our service, from cleaning their houses to putting in chimneys for them. Widows are very important to us.  We not only serve the widows by giving them food, but they also come to our house on Saturdays to come and hang out with us. What the widows need the most is prayer which we give them, and love, because the one they loved was taken away from them.
