Every month a new country; new ministry; new people to do life with; new routine. This has become my new normal.
To me it’s normal to pack up and move to another country each month. To say goodbye to the people I have met. This is normal. And I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
At the end of each month I pack my backpack with all of my belongings, give hugs, exchange information to those I have met, get on a bus and head to a location where the whole squad comes together to travel to our next country together. We focus on staying present and taking in all that we can in the ministry and the month God has for us.
This month I am in Georgetown, Malaysia. I am living and working at St. Nicholas Home for the Blind. I am living in a dorm room with 9 other women. 7 of them are squad mates and 2 are other volunteers. I am on the top bunk and share a bathroom with not only these 9 women but also other residents here at the Home.
We are working in various departments throughout the property Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5pm with an hour lunch break.
I am working in the library organizing and labeling books,
with children who are blind, deaf, and multi-handicap,
in the Braille office where books and learning material are translated into Braille,
wound care for a couple residents,
AND
providing physical therapy to one of the blind senior residents…I am able to use my degree and teach the staff how to do PT with an 86-year-old woman who had a stroke a year ago and now is very stiff. She is the sweetest little thing and I am excited to visit and work with her every day!
There is a mix of religions throughout the property. Some Muslim, some Hindu, some Christian, some searching, and myself along with the rest of the team have the opportunity to show who Jesus is to each and every person here. What a sweet opportunity I have been given to travel the world and represent Jesus! Because Jesus lives inside of me, when I enter a room, Jesus enters a room. How cool is that?!
Aunty Margaret believes in God. She believes Jesus loves her. During my visits with her, I read a passage from the Bible to her. Her caretaker sits in with us during the whole session even during the Bible reading. She is Hindu. She asked me what my religion was and I told her I believe in Jesus as my Savior and told her Jesus loves her too. She says I am very nice and friendly with all the people here. She sees something different in me. I pray she sees Jesus.
Please pray for the residents and the staff here at the St. Nicholas Home. Pray they see something different in us. Pray they see Jesus and want to know more. Pray for the team and I to have patience, strength, and excitement in all that we do.
