On Saturday, March 27th, Our team had our last film evangelism night in the village of Chiana in Northeast Ghana.
The film choice of the evening was about spiritual warfare. I’ll be completely honest; the graphics and filming were awful by any American standard. The movie could have easily been edited to be half as long, and it still would have been too long!
It was the second night we had played this one, so it was really difficult to actually sit through it again. However, the people in these villages think anything you could project onto a screen is the coolest thing since sliced bread, and they flock to it!
So, even though we painfully sat through this film again, the Holy Spirit had stuff to do that night! We didn’t realize until the next day all that had really gone on.
During the middle of the movie, a man came yelling and screaming and carrying on like a drunken man. Although he was speaking in the local dialect, he sounded very angry and it definitely made for a small scene. From my perspective, all it looked like was that a few of the men had pulled him away and sent him off from everyone. No big deal; just a little crowd control. I didn’t even think of it for the rest of the night.
We found out the next morning the man was actually the leader of the cult in the village that worshipped the false gods talked about in this movie.
This movie was actually made about the gods being worshipped in this part of Africa, and how one man came to a village to tell them about Jesus Christ and the powers of Heaven.
So, when the drunken cult leader came into the film site, it was actually the chief of the village who told some of the men to carry him off. The chief said if these white people came all the way from America to show this film, it’s probably worth watching!
How crazy is that?!?!
The people were seriously on the edge of their seats and completely into every word of the film. Even though there are some ideas in the movie that didn’t quite agree with me, I know it was a breakthrough to see these villagers cheering when the Holy Spirit was spiritually fighting against the occult practices.
Brad gave the perfect message afterwards, and there were probably 50 people who came forward to accept Christ. A good chunk were children who seemed to just be doing what their friends were doing, which seems to be a trend in Ghana so far, but I KNOW a lot of them were honesty there for Christ tonight, because I could see it in their faces and feel the Holy Spirit leading it.
I was working with the local pastor, who was translating for me, and it was a really cool experience to get to point these people to Christ!
The awakening in the chief of the village was probably the dominant breakthrough of all. I don’t know what he thought at the end of the movie, but just to know God’s Spirit is breaking ground through their head honcho is AMAZING!
When a leader of any group is actually following in the footsteps of Christ, the whole village is bound to change. Pray God continues to pour out His love over Chiana, Ghana!
Praise the Lord!
