Everyone and their mom seem to be writing blogs about, well, their mom’s. Seeing as it is Mother’s Day and I am missing my mommy dearest, I would like to tell you about her.
I came across this picture this morning and got to thinking about this day in particular. Homecoming is a somewhat crazy time at Baylor, it’s a really big deal. I’d been running on a few hours of sleep with midterms and late nights at float that week and she knew I was frazzled. My sorority has a huge breakfast for the parents and then we head to the parade. The breakfast starts ungodly early and my mom drove up super late the night before and slept over just to be there with me because she knew it was important. That got me to thinking about all the wonderful things my mother is:
My mom is an encourager. I can’t tell you how many times, especially in the past year, I’ve freaked out about life and what to do and she’s been there to lift my spirits. When I first mentioned this trip as a thought she was the first to tell me to go for it. When I tried out for every sport known to man kind in middle school and didn’t make a single team (funny thing, I hate sports, and I’m really terrible. Just took a while to get that memo) she always pushed me to keep trying. Turns out dance was my thing and she never missed a single practice, rehearsal, football game, pep rally or recital.
My mom is funny. She is always smiling and full of life. Last Christmas she decided last minute our tree would look better on the other side of the living room. She started to move the tree and minutes later I hear a loud crashing noise and my mom laughing. I run to the living room to see the tree down and her nowhere in site. Turns out she was under it when it fell, giggling away.
My mom is the life of the party. Spring Break my junior year of college we took a family cruise to Mexico and I brought a friend along. One day we took a catamaran to snorkel and they have loud music blaring. I’m laying on the floor moaning and dying of motion sickness and to make me laugh my mom heads into the middle of a mob of bikini clad college girls dancing and starts to bust a move. Let’s just say she had some sweet moves and nearly broke an arm when we hit a large wave.
My mom is a leader. She is involved in so much it’s crazy and she’s talented beyond belief. I love seeing her in her element. My favorite is watching her run the church craft show every year because she’s a total rock star. She is a natural leader and people enjoy following her and she is always quick to get involved.
My mom is selfless. I’ve never met anyone so willing to give anything and everything. From letting me raid her closet, to driving up to Waco just to fix my computer or have lunch with me when I’d had a bad day, to helping the family and more. My funniest example is when I spontaneously bought a 6 week old 3 pound pug my sophomore year, come to find out my apartment wouldn’t let me have dogs. My mom came to the rescue, drove up to pick up what she deemed “the ugliest dog she’d ever seen” and keep him until I found an owner. Well, 2 years later she still has my dog.

My mom is creative. She is an incredible artist (an art major in college). Unfortunately, it’s not a talent I inherited, as stick figures are a feat for me to draw so school projects she spent countless hours helping me. She also handcrafted me some killer costumes, including Ariel featured in an old blog (Princess in Training).
My mom is a spiritual leader. I remember growing up going to church with my mom. I remember having many conversations with her about anything and everything. I remember running home from camp after I accepted Christ and her being excited with me. Watching her cry the day I was baptized and helping foster my faith. She taught me Bible stories and helped me memorize verses and encouraged me to read my Bible.
Love your not so baby, oldest “baby,”
Nicole
