Mother’s Day has always held a special place in my heart. And it’s not just because I was born on that day and that every 7 years I celebrate my birthday on it (although that does have its perks!). But more so than that, Mother’s Day has always been special to me because God has blessed me with a mother who is so very special. There’s not a day that goes by where I don’t think of her or thank God for her.
I just wanted to take some time and write about my mother. Her name is Jan which is a form of Jane meaning God is gracious (more on that later). She is holding steady at the age of…just kidding Mom, I won’t do that to you. Regardless of her age, she still has the same joy and energy as if she were still a kid. That’s one of the things I love most about her. She can always brighten up a mood and put a smile on someone’s face because she is always so joyful. She just refuses to look at life negatively. And it comes from the joy and hope that she finds in the gospel of Christ. She is a strong woman of God who seeks to glorify Him in all that she does. I wouldn’t be where I’m at or have the faith that I have if it weren’t for my mom (and dad as well, but this isn’t your day yet haha).
My mother and I have always had a close relationship. I remember my elementary school days where she would always lay out my clothes for me in the morning and make my lunch for me (with a “love-bite” in the sandwich) and style my hair while we both sang “The Star-Spangled Banner.” (How did we choose that song Mom?) She would also help me with my school projects and take me to my sporting events. Life was good being a kid with a mother like her. I always told her that I wanted to stay age 8. And mother…I still wish I was (although I’ve come to accept the fact that I’m past that, never to return haha).
My mother has always been there for me. She’s always supported me at my sporting events. She’s always taken time to listen to me when I needed someone to talk to. She’s always been there to help me when I needed it. Even as I’ve been out of the house for almost 5 years now, she’s always been someone I can count on. Mother, I’m so grateful that. And I know that I’m not the only one who feels that way. My mom has such a HUGE servant heart and there are many people that she serves currently whether it is family members or friends that depend a lot on her and are appreciative of her sacrifices for them.
But the thing that I’m most appreciative for and admire about my mom is her love and grace for everyone she interacts with. It’s no coincidence that her name means “God is gracious” because it is so evident in her. I’ve never felt once that my mother didn’t love me. Yes, my mother disciplined me and set me straight throughout my life (she still does at times), but she always did so out of love and in a way that left no room for doubt that she cared deeply for me. If I end up with a wife and kids someday, I pray that that same grace and love will flow from me as well.
Mother, I love you. I am so blessed to be able to call you mother. There’s not a day that goes by where I don’t thank God for you. You are an amazing woman who is such an encouragement to everyone you come in contact with. I miss you very much and will be thinking of you on this special day. I hope you will feel the same love that I feel so strongly from you. Have an awesome day! God bless you.
