“Quieres escuchar?” I say to Jackson and Cynthia. They are a brother and sister who come over to the compound almost everyday to hangout. I was reading my bible outside and they had come over to sit by me. I asked them in the little Spanish that I knew if they would like to listen. They nod their heads eagerly.
When I got to our ministry site in Honduras I quickly came to the conclusion that a bilingual bible would come in handy so I bought one on my kindle. I opened it up and began to read in Galatians to them in Spanish.
Apparently I wasn’t very good because I only held their attention for about 30 seconds, but an elderly man had joined us and was listening as well. He was looking for work on the property.
I asked him,” Jesus en tu Corazon?” Is Jesus in your heart? He shook his head no. So I asked him if you would like me to keep reading and he nodded his head eagerly.
I decided to switch to Romans 8, this is my favorite chapter in the bible! I read for about 10 verses, which took about 10ish minutes because its definitely harder to read a language you don’t fully comprehend, before he interjected with,”Orar.”
I didn’t know what that meant, as a general rule I smile and nod if I don’t understand what someone is saying in a foreign language, and kept reading. Then 5 verses later he did it again. I nodded and smiled, but then he did it again a couple verses later.
Finally it clicked, orar means to pray. He was asking if we could pray. I of course nodded with eagerness at the prospect of praying with someone who didn’t know Jesus. Then feeling lead by the Spirit I asked him,” Quieres orar acceptar Jesus en tu Corazon?” Basically “would you like to pray to accept Jesus into your heart”. To my utter amazement he nodded again.
I was flabbergasted and speechless.
I quickly recovered and grabbed one of the Spanish speaking girls on my squad to translate for me, my Spanish had come to an end.
Together her and I lead him in the prayer to accept Christ into his heart!! All of this without using English!
I’ve got to say as far as epic events taking place in my spiritual walk this is one of the absolutely most amazing things to happen!
