Am I really still in Africa? Because it doesn’t feel like it. Italian pizza, boxed cereal, ice cream, beautiful cool weather, English
speakers, all things that I didn’t find last month but seem to be in abundance
here. Even the church is so different
from my experience in Kenya. There
wasn’t any crazy dancing and clapping, or annoying keyboard sound effects or
even a drawn out sermon. But instead an
orderly bulletin complete with communion, hymns, Nicene Creed, Eucharistic
prayers, a Bishop, and a benediction.

The area we a located in Kampala is one of the most affluent
areas in all of Uganda. The youth
members of the church are studying to be lawyers, doctors, computer software
engineers, and any other type of profession. To my surprise I have found it extremely easy to relate with the youth
both intellectually and spiritually. Our
ministry this month is focused on encouraging the youth of the church – 16 to
25 yr olds and partnering with them to do door to door evangelism in an
apartment complex, The Flats, across from the church, housing some 5000 people.

The Flats are very interesting in themselves. They were built in 1973 by the Israelites for
government employees and military personal and now house all races from white,
black, Indy, and Asian. The classes
range from rich officials to poor laborers. And the religion includes
everything from Muslim, Buddhist, Mormon, Catholic and Christian. It is the churches vision to create a small
group cell in every one of the 33 buildings that will cultivate ministry from
within. It is our aim to partner with
students from the church to create a lasting ministry in the Flats.

The students from the church are on Holiday break so we meet
with them everyday to fellowship, discuss the word, worship, encourage and
minister to the Flats. Please be praying that God would reveal to us creative
ways to reach out to the Flats and ways to encourage youth from the
church.
