Day
two on the Hill was today!
So much has happened since I arrived a week ago that I feel like my head is
spinning, in a good way though :). I keep getting the question, “What does your
day to day look like?” so I will break it down for you.
Interns
on the Hill are the bottom of the totem pole. We are the grunt workers, we do
the jobs that legislative staff really would rather not do. So let me break
down what I have come to think ‘might’ be a typical day for me this summer.
8am: catch the metro
three blocks from the dorms we are staying in
8:30am: arrive to my
legislators office
8:35am: turn on all the
lights, get the coffee pot going
8:40am: Pass out the
newspapers to all the staffers
9am: work day starts,
phones are live
9am – noon: Do any of
the following: sort constituent mail, answer phone calls, pick up flags (people
buy flags through their congressman..who knew?), run to another office get a
letter signed by a different congressman (did I mention that Capitol Hill is
huge and a maze with all the tunnels…Google map Cannon building if you want,
that’s where I am working), stuff constituent welcome to DC packets, log tour
requests, draft constituent replies, attending briefings and take notes for
legislators, keep current on issues and bills, run to ‘the cage’ where our
supplies are stored and run various errands that could be pretty much anything
and anywhere.
Noon – 1:30pm: Give
tours of the Capitol building. This consists of walking all over the buildings
to show the Capitol Building, House and Senate. I shadowed two tours the last
two days and MAN are they tiring. Ha. Who would think that walking and talking
for one and a half to two hours could be so draining..but it is, and I wasn’t
even giving the tour. Prayer for me to remember the information so I don’t
completely mess up the tour would be awesome! 🙂
1:30pm – ? This is when
I am typically supposed to get off work but so far have gotten out at 4pm and
5pm each day so who really knows when I will be off this summer.
If I get a more normal
schedule the plan is for me to teach English to diplomats kids. We will see
though 🙂

Would love prayer for
each person in my program.

Also, for the people I
will be working with in my office. I had a good conversation with one of the
people in my office yesterday about God, and even though he is atheist it was
really good to hear his points of view on things and learn a little about him.
He leaves in only two weeks. Praying God really speaks to him and can have some
more conversations before his internship is up.
Love you all, thank you
for being on this journey with me!
