On Monday, I had the joy and privilege of being able to do something kind of cool:
I got to be a lobbyist.
I went down to our nation’s capitol and sat down with people that work on the hill. These are men and women who work in my Congressmen and Senator’s offices, who make decisions and seriously influence the way our country’s laws are made.
Now, I’m sure you’re thinking, But Natalie, you’re not very political, and you don’t really follow the breaking news from the District. What would you possibly talk to them about?
It’s funny that you ask (or not, since I asked it for you).
I went down with International Justice Mission, a human right’s agency that brings rescue to victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression.
Basically, they’re in the fight against modern day slavery.
And now I am, too.
It’s hard being back in the States, working a “real job” that doesn’t include holding orphans or hugging widows, where homeless men aren’t my neighbors and prostitutes in bars aren’t my friends.
But through this opportunity, I was able to remember that just because the people around me wear dark suits and talk too loudly on their smart phones, just because I spend more time typing up document reviews than cleaning up after aborigines, just because my surroundings don’t include burning trash and open sewers doesn’t mean I can’t make a difference.
On Monday, I made a difference.
Today, I’m going to keep making a difference- because the girls in high heels have just as much of a call on their lives as the girls in chacos.
