Guat Update Numero Uno:
The other two teams left this morning to do construction on a local family’s house, while my team felt led to stay behind to do an A.T.L. (Ask the Lord). The idea is that you surrender up your day and draw yourself nearer to the Father; listening intentionally for where God would have you go. Kaja, Jordan and myself began prayer as we walked up the street. After awhile, Kaja stopped and approached a man working in a field of corn to our left, introducing ourselves, she then asked if we could help him in the field. For the next 30 minutes, we pulled weeds from within the rows of corn and tried desperately to maintain conversation with our very broken Spanish. We found out that Juan has a family of eleven and that they use the corn to make masa for tortillas and tamales. We expressed an interest in learning to make tortillas, he left and returned with his daughter. His daughter, Maria, invited us into their home where we were welcomed by the most precious little faces. Maria took us over to their outdoor fire pit; she patiently began to teach us her beauty technique of pounding out the tortillas. The kids were close behind us giggling as they witnessed the three white girls making a mess with the masa. After a few rounds, we came to the conclusion that we were probably slowing Maria down instead of actually being of help. Since the children had warmed up to us a bit, we shifted our focus to a game of futbol in the yard. I cannot express how grateful I am for futbol!! It is the universal language! Afterwards the children brought out a blue whiteboard and a dry-erase marker; on the left of the board was a list of Spanish words they wanted us to teach them in English. Oh I loved these moments so much! I have been so terrible with my Spanish since being here, but today the Lord gave me a victory! So much of my vocabulary came back to me as I sat translating words with the kids.
This morning as I sat in my quiet time I had no clue where the Lord was going to lead us today, but here at the end of the day I so grateful that we did surrender up the day to His leading!
ps. This is a little gold nugget for all of y’all who know me really well: The kids asked if I had music on my phone, I replied by turning on the song “Como La Flor” by Selena. Very enthusiastically, I told them that she was my favorite singer ever. Haha. Little Jaclyn sat beside me and sang all the words with me. MY HEART MELTED!!
Pps. Hi Madre! Love you
