The following article was written by Father Doran from St. Michaels, the church that lets us use their space for Fill-a-Belly…

“About a year ago, two women felt God calling them to serve the local homeless community.  On a Wednesday evening last April they stepped out in faith and responded to that call.  Cooking all the food from their home, they loaded the car with plates, utensils, cups and condiments, and brought it to a local park in the Village of Carlsbad.  They offered the meal to whoever would join them.  They continued this same routine through the summer, preparing and sharing these weekly dinners.  People were fed, relationships were built, and the two sisters found themselves in the midst of a whole new community of friends.

Last October I received a call from Morgan and Molly, who had actually heard about St. Michael’s through the community they had been serving!  The sisters were searching for a roof under which they could serve a nice Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner.  With Fr. Moquin’s blessing Ede Hall was made available.  Holiday meals were just the beginning of St. Michael’s relationship with this incredibly hands-on, ecumenical ministry now known as Fill-A-Belly.

Every Wednesday evening since Christmas Ede Hall has been home to this ministry and contributed to the success of its growth.  Already a second weekly meal has sprung up in Encinitas!  What began as a gathering of a dozen homeless individuals has swelled to a combined average weekly attendance of over 100!    Friends, family, church groups, professional chefs, all have volunteered their time, talent, and treasure toward the health of this very unique community.  St. Michael’s Youth Group has already served one Wednesday night meal and are scheduled to serve again in May.

The most significant part about this ministry is that everyone breaks bread together.  Morgan and Molly very intentionally demonstrate, by word and example, that this ministry is not simply about feeding hungry stomachs with food, but also about feeding hungry hearts with friendship and love.  Jesus said, “As you did it to one of the least of these, you did it to me (Matthew 25.40).”  Fill-A-Belly is a ministry to Christ himself.”

If you are interested in supporting Fill-A-Belly with your time, talent, or treasure, please feel free to contact Morgan and Molly at [email protected].  Or better yet, stop by Ede Hall on a Wednesday evening to meet some new friends, share a good meal, and serve Jesus.”

What a ride this last year has been!  Molly and I are in the process of starting a nonprofit called Fulfilled Life Inc. to umbrella Fill-a-Belly and other ministries we run.  We would love your prayers in this endeavor.
