I’m so happy this morning, it’s spectacularly beautiful here. Mexico now feels like home, but I’m sure I will say that everywhere. Samuel our host here in Jerusalem has made it his goal to show us a great time. He has been treating us to some wonderful things, like Special K for breakfast. I had no idea how excited I would be to eat cereal, but after a month of eggs, meat and sometimes soup for breakfast American food is a welcome treat.
Our accommodations are nice, the church we are staying at even has electricity in the room. At the house in Santa Maria there were tons of birds in the yard which meant two things, lots of bird crap all over the place, and roosters crowing all night. I would pay some one serious money to sever the vocal cords of all the roosters in Mexico. Who knew roosters were nocturnal! It’s much quieter in Jerusalem and full nights of sleep have been a welcome treat.
After a week of stomach problems I’ve finally started to feel better, thank God. The parasite diet is definitely a
good one! (Just kidding, Mom I’m really ok and hopefully it’s not a parasite.) I think that my problem has been a flair up of old food allergies that were triggered by eating eggs at two or three meals a day.
We even have a beautiful river to bathe in ever few days. I never though that shampooing in the river would become a completely normal activity, but it has. It definitely gets you a lot cleaner than bucket showers, which are the other option.
On Tuesday I was wondering in the neighboring village and met and amazing man named Timatao (Timothy). He spent 15 years of his life working with missionaries to translate the Bible into Chole. He has Parkinson’s disease, is wheelchair bound and can’t leave his home.
I enjoyed talking with him for a few hours and at the end of the conversation he gave me a copy of the Bible in Chole, and a bag of star fruit. I cry just thinking about it, the family doesn’t even have enough money to ride on the back of a truck into town, and yet they gave me one of their most special possessions.
Wednesday Samuel and Franscisco (the 24 year old pastor of the church we are staying at) had a special treat for our team. They took us to Salto De Agua a beautiful river town about an hour away and we got to spend the morning swimming. As we were headed out of town Samuel stopped to visit some of his friends at a beautiful restaurant. The owners decided that they wanted to treat us to a free lunch, it was delicious. I didn’t realize at the time but we were actually eating goat, and it was good!
After lunch we drove on to see two of the other World Race teams in a town called Agular. It was wonderful to
see where they have been living and working for the last few weeks. We showed up just in time for there final celebration dinner which the women of the village had spent all day preparing. They even killed a cow for it!
Starting tomorrow all the World Race teams will get together at Samuel’s beautiful river Palapa in Jerusalem for debrief. I’m looking forward to hearing about all God is doing in the teams then it’s race time again!
