Recently the Lord has been teaching our team and me, personally how to be someone of the calm. This phrase is taken from Mark 4:35-4, where Jesus calms the storm.

In the passage The Father tells Jesus to get in a boat and go across to the other side. So, Jesus and his disciples get into a boat in that direction. While on the boat a great storm arose and the disciples were afraid for their lives. In the midst of this chaotic storm, Jesus was fast asleep. Because the disciples were fearful they woke Him. Jesus, whom I assume was a little perturbed, in all authority calmed the storm and then asked the disciples why they were fearful and if they had any faith?

So being a person of the calm, what does that even mean? In this example we see how the disciples are so quick to believe that they are perishing, they abandon all hope and believe that their deaths are rapidly approaching.  They didn’t trust and gave into the natural, the flesh and could be characterized as people of the storm, the chaos.

John 5:19 says, “So Jesus said to them, “Truly truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing on His own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever, the Father does, that the Son does likewise”

Jesus only did what He saw the Father doing. So He saw the Father in a boat on the other side and that’s where He was going. He trusted the Father so much that He had no doubt that he would get to the other side. So being a person of the calm is trusting the Lord, with all your heart, above all odds, despite conflicting circumstances.

There are so many examples in the Bible, where God will speak promises to individuals, some of them, that didn’t make any sense. Each individual was different and they tried to rationalize it with their sensible thinking, however, it was when they relinquished their own thinking and trusted fully in God, they were able to see the Lord’s promise come to fruition.

So the question is, are you are you a person of the calm or the chaos? Do you run or panic when storms arise? Do you listen to the voices of the world or do you hold fast to the promises of the Lord?
