I have always wanted to know were the 12 days of Christmas came from. As a young child I thought it was a person that made songs up in their head. Yet the 12 days of christmas actually relates to the Bible.

1 True Love refers to God
2 Turtle Doves refers to the Old and New Testaments
3 French Hens refers to Faith, Hope, and Charity, the Theological Virtues
4 Calling Birds refers to the Four Gospels and/or the Four Evangelists

  1. Matthew
  2. Mark
  3. Luke
  4. John

5 Golden Rings refers to the first Five Books of the Old Testament, the “Pentateuch”, which gives the history of man’s fall from grace.

  1. Genesis
  2. Exodus
  3. Leviticus
  4. Numbers
  5. Deuteronomy

6 Geese A-laying refers to the six days of creation

First Day- God made light and darkness, therefore day and night
Second Day- God had separated the waters and made heaven
Third Day- God had separated the sea from the land
Fourth Day- Heavenly bodies are placed in the darkness and light
Fifth Day- Fish and birds are placed in the seas and skies
Sixth Day- Animals and man are placed on the land

7 Swans A-swimming refers to the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, the seven sacraments

9 Ladies Dancing refers to the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit

10 Lords A- Leaping refers to the Ten Commandments
