Chance to share, even on a boat
I always hear stories of a traveler reading the Bible to a group of people who are soaking in the very essence of the God’s Word. I’ve been blessed to share stories in the Bible with groups of people; however, the meetings are usually planned or with one other person who happens to sit next to me at the airport. Every time, no matter where I am at, I thank God for the opportunity to share.
This was an opportunity unlike any I can remember. I was sitting on a bench on the back of the boat watching islands go by and talking to two of my teammates. I catch three girls out of the corner of my eye. They are “casually” standing at the railing near us waiting for us to notice them. We had exchanged names with one of the girls earlier in a different location. I could sense they were curious to find out why we were aboard this boat, one of the cheapest modes of transport from one island to the next. What brought us here? Where were we from?
I walked over to befriend them. Jonaphy was excited to find out that I was a Christian and could teach her more about the Bible. We began exchanging questions and answers about families, school, hobbies, etc. Before the conversation went too long, Jonaphy asked if I could teach her the Bible. The three the girls followed me to my room, where I retrieved my Bible and went upstairs to their bed, one bed among 400 in an open room, where many of the natives choose to stay. They found a chair and set it beside their bed, so my head would not be crouched when I was teaching them. Within moments the three girls, turned into a group of ten men and women. All they wanted me to do was read straight from the Bible. God brought to mind personal stories and other stories, which have been told to me, to better illustrate lessons learned in the book of James. We also read parts of Matthew, Jonaphy’s favorite book, and exchanged favorite verses.
My mind glimpsed back to the disciples sharing stories of Jesus. No matter where we travel, we are finding God using us in both subtle and obvious ways. I give praise to God that He has put opportunities to share His word with all people.
