So, I have this tattoo idea… I am not sure if I am ever going to get an actual tattoo, but if I do, it would 100% be this… I think it would be worth it.
Jesus is a pretty excellent guy. He did some really incredible stuff during His 3 years of ministry on earth… but it didn’t end there. Nah, man. It totally didn’t end there. He gave us some instructions, some commandments, some pretty great commissions.
Well… THE Great Commission, if you will. You know, the one that says something along the lines of “Therefore, go, and make disciples of every nation. Baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Go, and teach them to observe all I’ve commanded, and I’ll be with you till the end of the age.”
Through that commission, Jesus equips us to continue His ministry. He tells us what to do (make disciples), and the rewards of doing so (His presence forever with us). But have you ever really just sat down and thought about the “Why?” behind that commission?
It’s simple, really, it lives in that word “therefore”. It isn’t just a “therefore” that references the sentence in front of it. It holds so much more weight than that. It is referencing the entire story of Jesus’ life and ministry. The “therefore” is talking about the whole book of Matthew!
It is saying “therefore” since Jesus was born of a virgin, “therefore” since Jesus called the disciples, “therefore” since Jesus healed the sick, “therefore” since Jesus raised the dead, “therefore” since Jesus died for OUR sins, “therefore” since Jesus rose from the dead, “therefore” since Jesus gave EVERYTHING for you, you GO!??
What else can you do after all the things he has done for you but to go! There is a part at the beginning of Acts where the disciples watch Jesus ascend into heaven, and then they stand there for a sec just thinking “that was a cool trick Jesus, we understand, you are super powerful, you can come back now…” and then these angels pop up and are all “Why are you looking up? He’s gone. Now go do what He commanded you to. Spread His word to all the nations!!!” and the disciples are all just “… ok…” and they just go.
They have no idea, honestly, what they are doing. They just go. Because Jesus told them to. They don’t have the perfect words or the perfect plan. All they have is the knowledge that Jesus has instructed them and equipped them with the things they need to know, and they just walk away and go.
… and I bet they were a weird mixture of excited and bewildered and shocked and psyched and tired and in awe of whatever the heck just happened and thankful and etc, etc, etc… It’s an ultra humbling moment.
Plus, knowing that we are Jesus’ modern day disciples is even more of a exciting/daunting/humbling opportunity, because we didn’t even get to live and walk with Jesus (as a person) for three years before we started following the Lord, it is 100% faith. But Jesus tells us to go… so we do.
So there is my tattoo.
“therefore, go”
“Therefore” because all of the amazing things Jesus has done, and will do for you, “go.”
