For month 10 my team, The Dirty Lovin’ Petersons, are involved in a ministry called “Unsung Heroes.” My teammate Margeaux summed up our ministry beautifully:

“Adventures in Missions (AIM) sends missionaries to nonprofits with an existing partnership. These relationships spread across continents to dozens of countries around the globe. However, in order to make new partnerships, AIM assigns a team of World Racers to find new people and organizations that could possibly host missionaries in the future. This assignment is called “Unsung Heroes”.
The Dirty Lovin’ Petersons received this assignment for the month of June in Bosnia and Herzegovina. With no specific instructions, the team was encouraged to pray for direction of where to go and where to stay in hopes of meeting new “unsung heroes” for the organization to build relationships with. The team essentially networks and makes connections led each day by the whispering of where the Holy Spirit tells them to go.”

This is not only a ministry, but a crazy trust exercise between you and God, you ask God for His whisperings and rely that He will be faithful in sharing that with you. However, the process it two-fold, where God trusts that you will discern His voice, and follow His will. It’s not a test, it is not pass-or-fail if you hear something or not, it’s an opportunity to stretch yourself, to intently listen to your Lord, and to do ministry along the way. Different people hear the Lord in different ways, some hear an audible voice, some see pictures, some just get a gut feeling; In the instance you are about to read about I heard Him speak through music, through a passage in His word, and through an overwhelming sense of urgency followed by peace.

So, the morning goes like this: we had our first family meeting of the day where the DLPs met for prayer for the direction of the day. This specific day we had time set aside for listening prayer, so I sat down in a comfy spot, opened my journal, opened my Bible, and put on my play list labeled as “Chill Christian Mindset”, and I got to praying. Before too long the song “The Valley” by The Oh Hellos came on and my heart stirred. At the same time I was reading through Luke and got to Chapter 3 Verses 5 and 6: “Every valley shall be filled…and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.” My heart flipped. I had known Bosnia to be mountainous, and mountains equal valleys, right?! Both the song and the verse talk about valleys in a state of desperation that God redeemed, and how amazing if that could happen in Bosnia! It seemed there where not enough people I could tell about the Valley, I was so drawn there, so excited to see where that word lead, and to see what God had for us in the valley, where ever and what ever it was!

I told my team about what I felt God had laid on my heart, and once I had spoken it aloud I felt such a peace, that the valley was exactly what I need to hear and share. Other teammates felt called to things as well with in the next few days, like working with youth, and oddly enough, a crater. Once we had the words, that is when the research began. We looked high and low for missionaries in the valleys of Bosnia, and it was not as simple of a google search that you may think! But our search turned out to be fruitful, and my teammate Sulley found an amazing missionary couple in Vares, a small valley town near Sarajevo, Bosnia. We knew very little about them and their ministry, but we planned a trip and the day after we arrived in Sarajevo, we took the 45 minute journey through the mountains to Vares.

During our visit we had many wonderful conversations, jokes, cups of coffee, views, and fellowship with those we met. (For more on this meeting, check out my teammates Jessica’s blog at this link here! Jess’s Blog) God lead my team there through the obedience of my teammates and myself. It turns out that the ministry, it’s with youth. It is located in a war-torn valley. Oh, and the last place we saw in that beautiful valley… a crater… yeah, God is good, he speaks to us, and is always faithful. All you need to do is listen and respond!

Love well,
