Seriously though, get used to being dirty. Even when you do get the chance to “shower” with a bucket and cup, there’s still dirt that refuses to leave. It actually kinda grows you as a squad being able to love each other even though we wreak of BO and spilled chai. But hey, there is a little excitement when you take off those Chaco’s and see your new glorious tan lines! Even though it’s just 90% dried mud, it still counts right?
Georgia is hot
Looking like a perfectly glazed doughnut after only three minutes outside is not as fun as it sounds. Georgia is hot, and dripping in sweat has never been so true. So drink up, stay hydrated, and most importantly embrace those sweaty group hugs and the clammy handholding like never before!
Sharing is caring
Go ahead and start praying for that servant’s heart because if you find yourself at a World Race training camp it’s one of the most important traits to have. You’ll find yourself at every meal with 8 people and one plate of food, or when half the squad “loses” their luggage for 2 days, or when you’re snacking in your tent and someone hears you open your bag of gold fish. This is when you learn that sharing really is caring, whether you are giving or receiving, there is just something so sentimental when someone gives you the last orange slice because you dropped yours on the ground or gives you a handful of Trail Mix with 5 M&M’s.
Poop is always a topic of conversation
Yeah I don’t really know why, but talking about your poop is actually going to happen at least twice a day. Sharing your best poop story somehow brings a bond between the squad that cannot be broken. Embrace it because you’ll be sharing 10 port-o-potties with at least 300 racers, so it’s bound to come up.
Dance parties are a necessity
When you walk into the room for your next session and you hear them blasting Lecrae, you can’t help but bust a few moves. Whipping it out to some throwback Hannah Montana, whilst shaking it off in your imaginary apple bottom jeans will make everything worth it. Coming back exhausted from squad wars at 8pm to see that somehow your team got their hands on some speakers will make your heart jump. You don’t even have to be a dancer, because flailing and jumping is the newest trend.
God is so Good
He truly is. He cares so much about us and He wants so much for us. He welcomes us back home with arms stretched wide. He is calling us deeper into places that are over our head, but He never leaves us. He has thoughts about us that we don’t even know yet, things in store that are just too good to be true. But they are. Because He is God & He is Good.
Everyone’s story has power
Your story is never too dark, and you should never have fear of sharing the places that God rescued you from. Your story is never too boring to share; it can change lives more than you can imagine. We get that sometimes you’re still currently walking through a dark time, we want to speak life into it. Your story has so much power, and the devil wants to you to feel shame and to never speak. So shout it out and glorify God through the chains he broke off of you.
Honesty is key
This is not a place to tip toe around your feelings. Be honest, if someone hurt your feelings tell them because they may not have even realized it. Iron sharpens iron, and you cannot grow as a body without honestly connecting and shaping up. This goes the other way too, if someone shined a light in your life or changed your perspective tell them! Encourage the body and affirm it in the gifts that the spirit has given!
Community is at the center of the gospel
Maybe the Trinity didn’t live in a tent together for ten days, but they hold community at the center. To have “church” and worship amidst a circle of tents is beautiful. There’s not much that can prepare you for living 9 months in 3rd world countries, but training camp does it well. It showed me how to love and live with 37 strangers, who are now brothers and sisters to me.
This is a journey
& not an easy one either. It’s not glorious. You will laugh, cry, argue, and most importantly grow. This is so much more than a mission trip, this is life. It is a journey not meant to be walked alone. We are in this as a body unified in Christ, and my prayer is that as a body we are always moving, reaching, loving, and growing.
