Well we are in Haiti. After a long bus ride from Santo Domingo, we made it to Porto Prince where all of the teams split up. We did receive opposition at the border of D.R. and Haiti, but God is faithful to His called and we claimed our victory thru prayer.
My team is paired up with team Bling this month working at a place called Canaan. So after our ten-hour bus ride, we all loaded into the back of a flat bed truck and bounced around for another two hours on the worst roads I have ever seen. Some of those potholes could have swallowed a whole car. Anyway, Canaan is basically a community. I don’t know how else to explain it. I want to call it an orphanage but it’s more than that. Everyone here has something to offer to the community. There are about 75 Kids here some are orphans, some have family but they just can’t support them. The kids have a very disciplined life. They wake up at about 6:00 and have devotions and get ready for the day. Then after breakfast, they have school till around 2:00. They are all responsible for various chores, and it all flows like a very well oiled machine. Some of the people here have grown up here. Some of the guys and girls came to Canaan when they were around 10 or 12 and are now in there twenties. Some of them do maintenance, some teach school or cook meals. They are told that they can live here as long as they have something to offer to the community. They also have classes at night. Canaan also has a clinic to help the local people that can’t afford expensive medical attention.
We have basically just inserted ourselves into the flow of things around here. Some of us teaching school, some of us working on projects around the place, some of us cooking or working at the clinic, or just loving on kids. I was able to go up the mountain with a few people and do some evangelism today. The other days I was on work projects.
The terrain here is beautiful. We are just a couple of miles off the coast up the mountain. We have an awesome view of the ocean and an Island, so the sunsets have been amazing. Our internet access here is limited, but I’ll try and get some pictures up. MT
