My teammate challenged me the other day to love without an agenda.

“Agenda?!” I thought. “How dare he say that I may have ulterior motives behind my relationships?! I’m not a player!”

After calming down and taking some time to think, I realized he was right. Almost every relationship I have had, had an agenda, an ulterior motive to it. Not all of them were bad, some were quite good, but there was still an agenda.

Ranging from the ex girlfriend in which my ulterior motive as a teenage boy was quite apparent, to my mentors which I surround myself with that they may impart their wisdom, I have always had a purpose, something to gain from the relationship.

This year….I cannot take anything. The sole purpose of this year is to give and to bless others. There are no business opportunities to take, hearts to win, or mentors to impress; it is just God and I.

So what does it look like to love without an agenda? It looks quite a lot like what Jesus did. To love others for the sole purpose of loving them. To sit with broken people for the sole purpose of sitting with them. Listening to the beggar for the sole purpose of listening to them, and being a friend, for the sole purpose of being a friend.

This is new for me. Very new. It’s a different type of love which I have never given before.
