Dear Swaziland,

You are youer than you, and that is truer than true. Being surrounded by South Africa, (except the one corner that I think borders Mozambique?) you maintain your own identity. I was almost surprised at the difference once we crossed out of the boarder, but it was impressive. To maintain so many traditions and camaraderie amongst yourself speaks volumes.

We heard a little bit about your communities, “chiefdoms”. To think that in each of your communities you vote, unanimously, before anybody new can move in shows how protective you are of your space. Knowing these chiefdoms have frequent meetings shows how much you care to make it work. Your mindset around the community you live with will both protect you, and allow you to grow.

We worked in a care point teaching kids and feeding them after school. The kids would always show up with a smile and some were quick to fall asleep our laps. Many of my ministry days I simply sat on the ground with a child sleeping in my lap, on my dirty skirt (sorry kid). We didn’t get to interact with adults of Swaziland very often – which I suppose isn’t that unusual since the life expectancy is so low – however we did feel very welcomed and loved by the children.

Sincerely,

M
