It was really like something out a of a movie, the kind of movie that I hate to watch. We were staying in the dorm room section of the backpackers hostel called ‘Brown Sugar’ .
I left the room to go to the bar area to find one of the other girls from my team because I told her that I would have tea with her that evening. As I was walking through the door that lead to the bar area someone wearing a ‘security’ vest grabbed my arm and pulled me through the door and as I turned around to look at him and see what was going on he cocked his gun and said ‘I am robber’ and then he put his gun in my back and pushed me into the other room and told me to get down on the floor.

He announced to the whole room ” I am robber, get down on the floor, everybody get down” so everyone laid down on the floor. At that time I couldn’t tell how many of them there were. I only heard three voices in that room and at that time I didn’t know that there were three other guys in the dorm room. All I could do was pray for everyone that was there and I wished I could go back to the dorm room and warn the people who were in there. This kind of stuff happens all the time in South Africa, I was so afraid that someone was going to get hurt or worse. I felt helpless, all I could do is put it in the Lords hands.
One of they guys came up to me with a gun and took my purse and my sunglasses and the ring I had on my finger and told me to lay down or he would ‘shoot me dead’ and he kept saying that to everyone. “lay down or I shoot you dead” “shut up or I shoot you dead”.
They have a dog at the hostel that lives there and she was barking and growling they kept telling her to get back. They never shot the dog and that made me feel better. I heard each one of them cock their guns though so I wasn’t sure what to think. After we heard then drive off one of the guys from my team got up to make sure they were really gone so we could all get up safely and we ran back to the dorm to see if everyone in there was alright. There were mostly girls in that room and that is where the more scary guys were.
We all cried and comforted eachother and tried to call home.
Some people lost ALL of thier stuff, clothes, underwear, thermarest, sleepingbag, shampoo, camras, laptops, cell phones, watches. Thank God it was only stuff……
