Yes, you have poop in your pocket. You have it, I have it, and the person next to you has it, too. It’s taking up space, it’s smelly, it’s disgusting, you’re ashamed of it, and it’s just getting worse sitting in there.
Sin is like poop in our pocket.
Everyone has sin in their life, it’s inevitable. Sin takes up space in your life, sin is disgusting, you’re ashamed of it, and sin just eats away at us.
This past weekend we had a Women’s Retreat with my church here in Columbia. We read the book The Furious Longing of God by Brennan manning (you should read it). It talks about how much our God loves us and gives us a glimpse of who our daddy wants us to be.
If you’ve ever stepped foot in a church you know that God loves you. It’s probably the most known thing about God, yet some days I really struggle with believing that in my heart. Why would God love me, a crappy person? Does he hold it against me when I don’t give Him enough time? What if I say the wrong thing to Him when I pray? Some days I am angry at God, other days I question Him. I’ve cried out to Him in desperation, but I’ve also been in awe of Him.
Now, my view of my daddy has changed. He’s our biggest supporter, He wants the absolute best for us, and He longs to have a deeper relationship with each and every one of us.
Before reading this book, God was that friend that lives in another state who I call on when something really good or really bad happens, or when I just miss them and wanted to catch up on life. Now, I picture God like my mom, on steroids, times 10. He embraces me, fights for me, loves me, longs for me, and calls me His little girl.
“Is your own personal prayer life characterized by the simplicity, childlike candor, boundless trust, and easy familiarity of a little one crawling up in Daddy’s lap? An assured knowing that the daddy doesn’t care if the child falls asleep, starts playing with toys, or even starts chatting with little friends, because the daddy knows the child has essentially chosen to be with him for that moment? Is that the spirit of your interior prayer life?” The Furious Longing of God, Brennan Manning.
Our daddy just wants some of our time, and the crazy thing is, you can talk to Him wherever and whenever you want to.
So, back to the poop in our pockets. No one wants their poop to just keep sitting in their pocket. We are called to confess our sins to one another and get rid of that poop. Yes, it sucks. Yes, it is super hard. But everyone has poop in their pocket whether they admit it or not. It’s corrupting our lives and the more we admit our sin and the less power it has over us. Life is hard and we’re all in this together. Also, the feeling after confessing your sins to those close to you is amazing. It’s like you’re a caged bird finally set free to go explore the world.
God loves us regardless. He died on the cross already knowing all of our sins. He knows every single thing about us already and still loves us an inexpressible amount. He longs to know you more and to become united as one. You are Daddy’s little girl or boy. He wants you to come and just spend time with him. He has a furious longing for you.
“Abba means in literal English: daddy, papa, my own dear father.”
