In Cambodia, we stayed at a church in a small village three hours away from any city. We taught English, and also held church and worship services. So many kids in the village would come, and many of them gave their lives to Christ because of our contacts previous ministry. Most of their parents are "budhist" (not really budhist, more closely related to animism or idol worship), and many get grief from their parents for becoming a Christian. But the kids attend church on their own, and really love God! During services we would pray for their nation, their families and their friends, and they would pray so passionately, often getting on their knees before God. Their dedication to God at such a young age, and following God on their own, was such an inspiration! Some of them led their parents to a saving faith, and all of them continually reach out to their family friends and community. Pray for these kids!
To give you an idea of their surroundings: Often there were fires burning on the side of the road, which were offerings to different spirits. We would often wake up and hear chanting over a loud speaker coming from the center of the village. They worship these evil spirits, and then people get sick, and die, and bad things happen, and then they offer sacrifices to make those spirits go away. Then they offer up to different spirits, and the same thing happens. Our contact told us some pretty crazy stories of stuff that goes on there.
It was such a blessing to teach English, and play games with all the kids. I also had opportunities to drive (by moto, hanging on the back with a guitar strapped to my back while one of the Cambodians drove) to different houses, and hold bible studies and worship. I got to share testimonies, and teach from the bible. I found out later, one of the guys in my bible study had formally been a satanist, and he climbed a mountain and stayed there for awhile. He got very sick, and was going to jump off the mountain and kill himself, but some people found him and took him back down to safety. I guess he has a kid who became a Christian through our contacts ministry, and his son ended up bringing him to a bible study, and he became a Christian! The whole time I was teaching and didn't even know the guys story! Pretty wild!
