I came across this today in my email, it is from an online bible study…
Are You the Pen or the Penman?
By Eric
“My heart is stirred by a nobel theme as I recite my verses for the king; my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer.”
(Psalm 45:1)
Paper holds ink and characters spread themselves across its fibers, but it would never dare to claim ownership of the words upon its pages. The ink falls magnificently, elegantly and forms shapes and sizes all unique, conveying purpose. Yet, it would no more claim to be the voice behind the words, than the paper claims the ideas. The pen, though it bares the ink forward, even controls its movement across the paper, would never assume to be the master behind the words. Arms, muscles, tendons and bones are all but tools to the author. Each has a purpose and a part to play, vital in its duty.
The story of our lives is written by God on the fabric of time. Through our choices we play the part in drawing shapes and characters all unique to our circumstances, environments and personalities, but we cannot claim to be in control of it all. Our bodies, our hearts are but tools for God to use as He sees fit in this life. A pen would never dare to control the hand of the author, how then should we dare to overcome the wisdom of God? We are created to glorify God in word and deed, but if we hold our tongue, like a broken pen we are good for nothing. If we are not constantly refreshed by the author, we will dry out and be good for nothing. I ask you then, are you the pen or the penman?
