Having the opportunity to experience life in El Salvador has been the greatest kind of adventure. It’s been an adventure that’s made me desperate for Jesus, that’s made me rely on Him more than I ever have before. There’s something about being thousands of miles away from home that makes me need my Savior so much more.
My team and I are living with the YWAM (Youth With a Mission) community for about a month and a half, joining in on their ministries. I know a lot of you are probably curious about what I’m up to down here so here’s an overview of my schedule–I use the term schedule very, very loosely because it’s always subject to change.
Mondays we go into Gerardo Barrios -which is a squatter community- and teach the children an English lesson. While we are teaching there is also an adult discipleship program going on across the street that other YWAM staff and students run.
Tuesdays we run a feeding program where we go back into Gerardo Barrios and invite the kids to come and eat lunch. The kids that are invited are ones that are attending school (to teach the importance of education), showered (to teach the importance of personal hygiene) , and they have to pay ten cents (to teach that while missionaries are able to help, the people must also be able to provide for themselves). When they arrive we wash their hands and then bring them their food and pray with them and before they leave we have them brush their teeth.
Wednesdays/Thursdays we visit the University and the Hospital and talk with the people and pray for them. On Wednesday nights we also have a ministry where we walk the streets and talk to and pray over the prostitutes.
Fridays we have our adventure days! So far we’ve gone to a museum, a beach (El Tunco), visited a waterfall, lake, and a town called Sochitoto. This is a video of our last off day in Sochotito 🙂 https://youtu.be/eUm8SE1N82k
Saturday mornings we go back to Gerardo Barrios and play with the children and sing songs with them and preform a drama that we then teach a bible lesson on.
Sundays are our much needed rest days. We found a church called Union Church which is a nondenominational Christian Church with the most beautiful view I have ever seen and is full of the most welcoming members, we really feel like part of the family which is such a blessing.
I’m loving my time here and am so thankful for all of your support! I’m still short around $1,000 so if you feel led to donate you can do so on my page! More updates and stories of my experiences coming soon 🙂
