It still hasn’t really sunk in that my three months in East Africa is over. It feels like it was only yesterday that I arrived in Uganda ready to start the journey. There was however times when I felt that I had been in Africa for years and that I was ready to move on. I started the journey with my own idea of what Africa was like as I had visited Swaziland a couple of years ago. My experience this time was totally different. I encountered many challenges that at times pushed me to my limits. However I’m glad to say it pushed me closer to God and made me realise that I could not get through these next 11 months on my own strength. I spent 3 weeks living in my tent, I got sick, I travelled on long bus journeys where personal space doesn’t really exist, I witnessed poverty that completely broke my heart. I met incredible people, I saw amazing views and I fell in love with Africa all over again and in a completely different way from before. Adventure is fun but you have to be ready to face the challenges that come your way because trust me the experiences are worth it.
So here’s a list of 11 things I took from my time in Africa.
1. Number one has to be the people, they are just amazing. Some of the kindest people on the planet. There was many times we were welcomed into homes for coffee, food and to share stories.
2. Dust and dirt kind of becomes a part of who you are, you literally find it every where, no matter how much you shower.
3. If you find a flushing toilet with toilet paper that is a luxury and you should cherish these rare moments. (Always carry toilet paper)
4. Squatty potties do exist.
5. I experienced my first ever bucket shower in Rwanda. It was pretty cold and probably the quickest shower of my life.
6. I have a strong dislike for mosquitos.
7. Building relationships is so important!
8. Every person has a story and every story is worth being told. I have heard some of the most heart breaking stories here in Africa and I will never forget them.
9. Traditional food is always the best food.
10. There is always hope.
11. Community is a wonderful gift.
I am thankful that I have been able to do these first 3 months in Africa where I learned so much culturally, how life is ministry and how a simple smile can change someone’s life… However if I want to be able to stay for the 11 months I need to be fully funded by the 28th of April. I am already so grateful for those that supported me this far and I am amazed at how God has provided but I am still $5,180 away from my target.
I find it difficult to organise fundraising events whilst on the field so I rely more on online donations. If you would like to support me then you can do this through my blog or contact me.
Thank you for the support and I will update you on what’s happening here in Malaysia.
