Gracie

Gracie is 19, from Oregon, and knows what she is supposed to do.  She has already been to Namibia twice and is back this time to start an orphanage in the north.

In a country on constant water shortage- hello, Kalahari desert!- the government has given, yes simply handed over, a building for her to use with free electricity AND water.

She already has five kids she is going to take in.  Did I mention that she is 19?

Anyway, before we even knew these things about her, we were chatting in the kitchen and I felt I needed to tell her that we were here to talk with her.  Only a mildly weird thing to say to someone you don’t know. But after that we found out she is a Christian and what she is doing.

This week in particular she is doing a ton of research. I immediately offered my services.  You know how they say, “you learn something new everyday”?  Well, yesterday I spent my time learning many new things as part of helping Gracie.  Things like… how to treat severe diarrhea. And what happens when bit by a Black Mamba.  Also that the signs of rabies can show up months to years after a bite. It was very compelling stuff, but entirely helpful for Gracie.  She is a stud.

So, we are here in Windhoek with absolutely no plans and here is this girl who could use some help and encouragment.  Again I told her that the Lord had brought us to Namibia to meet her and tell her that what she is doing is good, God approves, and will help her along the way.

With shining eyes she said, “You guys are the first Christians I have met here.”

“Yet I am not alone for my Father is with me.” John 16:32

P.S. Sorry Mom and Matt, but cliffhangers are my favie!
