Nepal was a
very interesting month to say the least.
As you read previously,
I went on a crazy hiking adventure. The week to follow, my co-leader
Joel, almost takes off his thumb trying to kill a chicken
for lunch.
He got the chicken twice, but the third time, he
chopped into his hand
instead of the chicken. Thank God I was
upstairs
(I can’t stand to see them killing the chickens-I get
sad)! Steven, one of our team leaders, ran upstairs to tell me what
happened. He looked as white as a ghost and he was all clammy. It
must have been a disgusting sight to see.

My birthday was the same week, but
I didn’t get to spend it with Joel or most of the team, because they
were visiting him in the hospital. I tried to go see MT. Everest
with one of our other teams. We got up bright and early at 4 am, and
spent 3 hours at the airport, only to find out our flight was
canceled due to rain. I tried to keep a positive attitude
throughout the day, I mean after all I was spending my birthday in
Nepal : ) Not many people get to have that opportunity. Then my
sister and
my niece called me, and my niece sang me
“Happy Birthday” in her Norah Jones voice
and…I lost it.
They didn’t know I was crying, I tried to keep it together while I
was on the phone. Once they hung up, I cried and cried and cried.
I don’t know why I was emotional. Maybe it was a mixture of Everest
being canceled, Joel being hurt in the hospital, and not realizing
how much I really, really missed my family. So unfortunately I had
a really hard day emotionally.

It was an awesome surprise though to
walk into the living room before dinner and see a display of
a birthday cake and a bottle of Coke. I was given a tub of ice
cream as my birthday gift and Bim, our Nepalese mama, tied a scarf
around my neck. Everyone sang me happy birthday, and Meghan was
forced to feed me cake, because that is the Nepalese tradition
: ) We had cake and ice cream floats! That always makes for a great
day!

A few days later, we met up with the
squad and Sam surprised me with a birthday gift: a clear
plastic box that said “Happy Birthday” on the front and a fake,
rose corsage inside. LOL! And Josie bought me a can of Dr. Pepper,
which is the equivalent to gold when you are overseas. It was
definitely not the birthday I expected to have….but it turned out
to be great! Gotta love, how the World Race always reminds you, to
not have expectations.
