Coach Deer always told me that showing up is half the battle. Showing up to practice, class, work, camp, it doesn’t matter where or when. You will put the work in when you get there. Just show up.
We spent some of our time in remote villages of Vietnam with our incredible contact (who will remain unnamed for the safety of her ministry). Basically we met her and a gang of moto drivers outside our hostel at some ridiculous morning hour and then we would ride into the sunrise.
Yes the sunrise.
And we would ride, and ride and ride. I think on this particular day we spent more time on the motos than actually doing ministry. An estimated 7 hours that day of moto riding was the price for the salvation of an elderly couple.
I realized in Vietnam that all we had to do was show up. Literally. Thats all it was.
I’d like to say that everyone was saved because of our super articulate and moving explanation of the gospel. Or because of our supernatural ability to show these love and grace just like Jesus…
But no, they were saved because just like we showed up, so did God.
It was actually incredibly humbling to realize that I was essentially dispensable in the whole process. All of it could have happened if I were not there. Salvation, baptisms, prayer, testimonies, conversations could have happened without me but still… I was there.
For whatever reason, God allows us to come along side him in his work. He allows us to have a glimpse of the spiritual reality of the Kingdom of Heaven. He allows us in all of our brokenness and humanity to take part in reuniting his children with Him. He gives us each other. He gives us grace and opportunity after opportunity to just…
show up.
