All week I have had a song stuck in my head and tonight I figured out why.
I want to give in. I want to give up. I want to be a failure.
Being a failure is easy. Listening to the lies of the world is easy. Giving in to my flesh is easy. Aimlessly wandering is easy.
My desire is to submit to my humanity, my loneliness, my brokenness, my sin, my disobedience, my defiance, my helplessness, my desperation, my excuses, my weariness, my despair …
If I give in, I get a pass on being who God called me to be. If I give up, I don’t have to strive to live a life above reproach. If I fail, I don’t have to be accountable.
I’ve been feeling a little desperate, dark, and doubtful.
I believe the Truth but I was willing to hear the whispers and shouts that were contradicting Him. I have a firm foundation but I was using trash to build up my life.
I wanted to warm a pew instead of BE the church. I wanted the easy way. I wanted to escape from the reality of who I am in Christ because I didn’t want the responsibilities.
This week “We Believe” has been on a pretty constant repeat in my head. (Yes, the kids are singing this at Camp Sonshine so I hear it several times a day. That is only reinforcing what God is trying to show me.)
There are days when I am broken and bloody. There are days when I am worn and weary. There are days when I am crying and careless. There are days when I am dry and dusty.
On all of those days I still have a choice to believe the Truth or not. I also have the choice of whether to live like I believe Truth or not.
Many days recently I have had to remind myself that I do believe the things in this song and they affect my life. I also have to remember that I am not just broken but also redeemed. I am not just weary but also the bride of Christ.
I am called by the Creator of the universe to join Him in His quest to spread the glory of His name to the ends of the earth. Do I believe that or not? Do I believe it enough to let it change my life?
“We Believe”
In this time of desperation, when all we know is doubt and fear, there is only One Foundation. We believe. In this broken generation, when all is dark, You help us see; there is only One Salvation. We believe, we believe.
We believe in God the Father. We believe in Jesus Christ. We believe in the Holy Spirit, and He’s given us new life. We believe in the crucifixion. We believe that He conquered death. We believe in the resurrection, and He’s coming back again. We believe.
So let our faith be more than anthems, greater than the songs we sing. And in our weakness and temptations, we believe, we believe!
We believe in God the Father. We believe in Jesus Christ. We believe in the Holy Spirit, and He’s given us new life. We believe in the crucifixion. We believe that He conquered death. We believe in the resurrection, and He’s coming back again.
Let the lost be found and the dead be raised. In the here and now, let love invade. Let the church live love; our God will say we believe, we believe! And the gates of hell will not prevail, for the power of God has torn the veil. Now we know Your love will never fail. We believe, we believe!
We believe in God the Father. We believe in Jesus Christ. We believe in the Holy Spirit, and He’s given us new life. We believe in the crucifixion. We believe that He conquered death. We believe in the resurrection, and He’s coming back, He’s coming back again! He’s coming back again! We believe.
