What do you think of when you hear the word Maxi? Maxi Pad,
right. (Guys you don’t have to be ashamed that you thought of that, it just
shows your man-ly-ness)…
Well here in Romania one form of transportation is a Maxi
Taxi (or bus). And yes every time we talk about getting one I think of a Maxi Pad but mainly because it makes me laugh and riding a maxi taxi usually makes me laugh.
What
does transporation look like on a Maxi Taxi? Well I’m glad you asked……
On a Maxi Taxi you….
- first pray that one will come and pick you up because you never know what time one will show up
- Negotiate prices with the driver after he sees
you are American….and you finally get the Romanian 2 Lei deal! - Pack as many people in the taxi as you can…..if
there isn’t room in the cab, welp open up the trunk/hatch – you can fits at least 3-4 more people there! - OR sit in the windshield 2 almost 3 deep
- OR stand in the doorway praying the door will
not open as you travel to your destination - Sit under a black light on your teammates lap
and have a light show with your gloves - Pray that you will end up in the
right destination never really knowing where they will drop you off - Stand waiting for one for 45 minutes because none of the drivers wanted to take you AND a tree you bought for a project (Yes, we took a tree on a maxi taxi – and YES it was hilarious!)
- Meet random strangers who speak Romanian to
you over and over thinking you will understand at any moment….but really you
have no clue what they are saying to you…. - Notice you are 1 in 4 women on a taxi – there are LOTS of men in Romania
- Have a random man ask you if you are an
evangelist after he realizes you have no clue where you are or if you are on
the right maxi taxi (the windows were fogged, we couldn’t see 🙂 - Have to push forward quickly using elbows just so you can get off. If you don’t you will either get left in the taxi or get the door shut in your face and have to yell to the driver to STOP and let you off!
- And finally just call it a taxi maxi and LAUGH because of the name and because of all the crazy times you have had on them!
