A Quick Update from
the DR – **pictures to come, internet wasn’t fast enough today to upload – will try tomorrow….
Hello friends and family! I can’t believe it’s been 2 weeks!
WHOA! Please excuse my lack of communication, I haven’t been able to get to the
internet café in order to post updates but now that we have our ministry
schedule I should be able to update more.
The first week here in the Dominican was great! We spent the
first few days getting a bit of training and being sent out into Santo Domingo
to Ask The Lord…..This is a way of life, you simply ask the Lord what He has
for you, listen for a word, and then go and do it. We met some great people in
Santo Domingo, a few that spoke a little English, but most who spoke Spanish. My
high school days of Spanish have been coming in handy, but it is nice to now
have a translator. The heat is becoming a bit more normal :), I feel like I am
going to have great hydrated skin when I’m done. J
July and then will travel to Haiti in August. Our 4 other teams are in Haiti
and doing well. The 7 teams (48 people) are living in a 4 bedroom house. We are
definitely experiencing community 🙂.
Below is a picture of the house and my bed (my mat isn’t on the floor but I sleep on the floor in front of the fan).
It’s fun, but definitely has it’s challenges when you want alone time, a
shower, bathroom, to cook, or a space of your own. We have become a family through it and are embracing communal living. 🙂
A few other tastes of my last week are…
·
Worship and teachings in a casino
·
Using the internet at a barber shop (2 computers
in a little cubby, only $1/hour)
·
Converting USD to pesos and back again
·
4 hour bus ride to San Juan in the very front
seat, 4 people deep. Sleeping on one another during the ride and reading my
Bible and having quiet time while the rest of the bus played trivial pursuit
(I’m learning how to be ‘alone’ while surrounded by others)
·
Dancing FREELY during worship & in the
streets of the DR
·
Pedicures on the beach that leads to a
sisterhood and deliverance (see my next blog)
·
Trekking through a rushing river (aka the
street) to get to the grocery store during a rain storm (we needed food)
·
Learning to eat on $4/day
·
Being hissed at and honked at every time you
walk around. They honk because we are white gringos and the hissing is their
cat call. Our guys are great protectors tho so they’ve got our backs.
There are many other things I would love to share with you,
but these are just a few. It’s been beautiful to see God move and to see His
hand in each and every day. I’m so thankful for the freedom I’ve experienced
even in the first 2 weeks and look forward to God changing me each and every
day. Stay tuned for more fun!
