I just read this article on CNN about the end of the world, how humanity’s waiting for it and we’re built with this innate fascination for the thing.  The article was actually really amusing and I give mad props to Todd Leopold for such witty humor.  While highlighting some great facts from pop culture, he does bring up some good points though.  You should really check it out.

It got me to thinking though, why are people so fascinated with the end of the world?  How many times have we been down this road anyway only to find ourselves still walking the road after our fated ‘deadline’ has passed?  I say one too many.  It’s almost as if one day, somebody dug up the Mayan calendar and had a mild panic attack that sent shockwaves of fear throughout humanity.

I just don’t get it.

I mean, Christians have been clutching their church pews for centuries awaiting the second coming of Christ, to get caught up in glory.  Dates have been declared… time has still passed.  But I want to pose this one heretical question to them: what if… and just what if… what if we (as the Church) are actually the second coming of Christ?

Yeah, I know.  It’s beyond heretical and I’ll probably get a lot of emails about it.  That’s okay though.  I’m just posing a hypothetical question.

But what if?  What if the Mayans ended their calendar on December 21, 2012 because they were just tired of writing down dates?  What if I’m not married before the end of the world?  Does that mean I die a loner?  What if Revelation was about just that… a Revelation… and not a “prophecy” about the end of time?  What if Revelation actually already happened?  Does that mean that Kansas won’t be flooded by the Pacific Ocean or that the sun is going to produce a solar flare that will fry our atmosphere?

I don’t know.

I guess I just don’t understand what all of the fuss is about.

Because if we are approaching the end of the world… what are we really going to do about it anyway?  It’s beyond our own control, right?  I mean… that’s been the idea since the origin of these prophecies and myths?  Can we really reverse the effects of global warming?

So what do you think about the end of the world?
