Well it’s Friday,
which in my own mind means that it’s time for my weekly update. I hope to do this on a regular basis although
I’m not sure how regular ‘regular’ is in my life. After a year on the World Race, routine and
normal tend to take a backseat in one’s life. Anyway, here’s a list of ten things that happened this week – in no
particular order.

1.
Invitation
to a community
. We all moved up here
over the course of the last two weeks, “we” being the new World Race staff that
just came off of the field. All of us
started attending a church here in Port Huron called Cross Current. It’s a pretty radical church that opened its
arms WIDE to receive us. Because of the people in this particular body
of believers, we now have our entire house furnished. Thanks, guys!

2.       Who
Killed Bessy?
 For awhile there I was
a little worried at how I might put food in my gut seeing as my support account
isn’t exactly pulling in the dollars right now, but then something happened – a
gentleman who was at church on Sunday heard about our ministry. He just so happens to raise cattle and one of
his heifers ‘mysteriously’ slipped on ice and busted her head open… so he had
to, you know, ‘finish her off’. He had a
plethora of ground beef but had nowhere to put it. I’m sure you can figure out the rest. We now have a freezer in the basement LOADED
with ground beef. Thank you, Jesus for
killing cows…

3.
Beginning
work
. Yep – this is why I’m up here,
to see a generation awakened and the world come alive with the Kingdom! Our work week was kicked off with a staff
meeting on Monday followed by lots of work ON TOP of finishing moving into this
house. It’s been a busy week.

4.
Snow. I really struggle with writing this out and I’m
praying that none of my housemates read this blog – but I think that the snow
might be starting to grow on me. It’s
currently snowing as I write this. And (sorry mom)… I think it’s pretty. (I
might regret writing this later…)

5.
Community
Dinner
. We decided that every
Thursday night will be our community dinner night where we’re all going to be
intentional about sitting down and having a meal together. Jake dazzled us with his creative Mexican
chef tactics. The man can cook! So we enjoyed a marvelous Mexican dinner that
was probably the best thing I have had in centuries. I ended the night with, well, getting
sick. Lord only knows why – but it wasn’t
the food.

6.
Community
Living
. I’m learning the
ins-and-outs of community living – and it involves a lot of forgiveness and a
lot of grace. Granted, this hasn’t been
a huge problem yet. I’ve just never
experienced community living like this in America. There is so much good about it though. I love walking into the kitchen every morning
and seeing some of my favorite people…

7.
Showering
with cold water in the winter
. So
the house we’re living in was vacant for a year or more before we lived in it…
and it was built in the 1920’s. There’s
nothing wrong with that, it just has A LOT of character… and a few
problems. Jake and I couldn’t figure out
why every morning we only had hot water in our shower for the first
minute. I called the landlord, he sent
out a plumber a few days later, and we found out that our 75 gallon hot water
tank was bad, hence, no hot water. Thankfully we got a new one installed yesterday… and I took my first hot
shower this morning!

8.
Donuts. I know this sounds like a pretty ridiculous
highlight, but my closet smelled like donuts EVERYTIME I opened it in the
morning, and I would always think to myself, ‘I wonder who bought donuts?’ only
to realize – every time – that no one had bought donuts. Well, I was relaying this story to Mark
Wargo, the pastor at Cross Current, and he bought our house a couple dozen
donuts. They’re all gone now.

9.
My first
World Race interview
. I gave my
first interview for the World Race yesterday. I can’t lie when I say I was sort of nervous, which doesn’t make sense
seeing as I’m the interviewer. I mean, how do you judge how these people are
really going to be? It went well though…
I think I’ll be okay doing more in the future. (I probably bought myself more
work with that statement…)

10.
Harney
& Sons African Autumn Tea
. Perhaps you think this is the most ridiculous thing, that drinking a
particular kind of tea was a highlight during my week – but I just don’t think
you understand. This is the best tea
that I’ve ever had in my life… and I think I’ve had an unhealthy amount of it
already.

I hope to update you once a week on what’s going on,
probably through a highlights list or something. I like keeping you all in the loop. And I’m still looking for supporters. I have a support raising goal of
$1700/month. Clearly – I’m WAY
off the mark for the month of January. Help me catch up for February! And I’m looking for mailing addresses to send my monthly newsletter
to. If you’re interested in receiving
one, shoot me a message with your mailing address.
