This month we are calling Penang, Malaysia home and living in the lovely K&K budget hotel, enjoying the luxury of hot water and beds with mattresses.

Ministry this month has been filled with selling fish, chopping vegetables, and lots of Indian food.

Last week we volunteered at the Adventist Hospital assisting their Development Department raise money for children and adults in need of heart surgeries. Our hospital contact Nancy gave us our week’s mission: raise 1,200 Ringgit (around $400) by taking stuffed fish, heart shaped coin boxes and CD’s to the patients in the waiting rooms and persuade them to either purchase our items or donate to our cause. So that’s what we did. For four days we spent the afternoon asking every single patient in the hospital if they wanted to buy stuffed fish and coin boxes so children could have the opportunity to have a life-saving surgery. And to those curious – we raised over $600 in our time there! Yay!

This week we are volunteering at the YWAM feeding center. Monday, Wednesday and Friday YWAM opens their doors and provides free breakfast and lunch for anyone who comes. These days we’ve chopped a lot of vegetables in the kitchen and built relationships with beautiful and interesting people. Stephen, Beh, and Tommy are three guys of whom I’ve grown specifically fond. Yesterday I helped Hannah, a YWAM staffer, with her bible study. It was precious. We sang “Jesus Loves Meâ€ over and over, alternating between English and Malay. She gave a short lesson in Malay, so I was a bit lost, but then we broke into small groups and prayed with the men. My friends Tommy and Beh were with me, and after I prayed over their prayer requests, I turned to Tommy and asked if he would like to pray. “I don’t know howâ€ he responded in broken English.  My heart sank, and I tried to explain that prayer is simply talking to God. He kept repeating that he reads his Bible every day, but couldn’t grasp that HE too could pray and it’s not just something the white foreigners do. If you could, keep Tommy in your prayers. Pray he grasps the simplicity of prayer and the realization that his relationship with God goes beyond reading his Bible. Pray language does not become a barrier as we communicate.

All in all, I am really enjoying this month. We are in the middle of a busting city, full of different ethnicities. The Chinese and Indian culture have a large influence here, and honestly it feels like we are in India instead of Southeast Asia. We are in walking distance of the jetty where we can see the ocean and in walking distance of awesome Indian & Chinese cuisine. Below is the jetty and a favorite restaurant we frequent at least 4 times a week. Pray for our team as we build relationships with the locals and continue to advance the Kingdom of God on the island of Penang!
