Sitting at a coffee shop working on my expense report for the month when a little girl, about 5, came up to me speaking Montenegrin. Of course I had no idea what she was saying, but I knew what she was looking for….
Money
I had nothing to give her. I was actually more concerned on why this little girl was running around by herself at 10:30 at night. I wanted to keep her around me just incase her parents came looking for her. A few minutes later her mom came and they walked off
This wasn’t the first time this happened to my teammates or I. We asked our host about it and they told us it was how the gypsy culture worked
They proceeded to inform us that the parents don’t allow their children to go to school. They don’t hold jobs. The parents teach their children how to beg for a living
This news broke my heart
I was baffled
Don’t parents wanting more for their children than what they have been given?
Then I was furious
How dare those parents keep their children from getting a proper education, and making something out of their lives
Then I was encouraged
Because I know that Jesus can give these children hope and see that their lives can have purpose outside of begging. That they can change their path in life
After that day we made sure that we had a least one Bible, written in their language, with us to hand the small boys and girls if they came asking for money
My prayer is that at least one of these little children will start following Jesus whole-heartedly. Want a remarkable testimony that will be
