Jo Slovo is a squatter camp just outside the fence here at Refilwe where we are staying. Many of the world racers have had a chance to go and minister at the camp. My opportunity came this Friday. I went with a group of four to keep our numbers down so we wouldn’t draw unwanted attention to ourselves.

Having never done ministry in this environment, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I went in only with the stories from the other racers to go by. Many of their stories were pretty cool. One team was invited into a house and before they sat down the lady asked if they were going to pray for her. Another went to a house and talked to a man who got saved. Then the man told them they needed to talk to his brother up the street who also got saved.

With all this in my mind I walked into the camp. We walked up the first street we came to. This took us by a large green water tank were small kids were filling up buckets of water to take home. We offered to carry the water for one little girl.

As we carried the water we met Moses, a boy from the summer camp we have been doing all week. He took us home and we got to meet his cousin and some of his friends. Before we knew what had happened we had a dozen or so kids running around us. Many of them were “our” kids from the day camp.

We got to talk to and pray with Moses and his friends about God and his provision. We also got to pray for healing with him. He has cataracts in both eyes. We didn’t see an instant healing but we did get a chance to talk to him about staying in faith and believing for his healing.

Going to the camp was such an eye opening experience. You can hear about it. You can even see it on TV. But until you go there you just don’t get it. At least I didn’t. So little could change these kids lives. They don’t have what we consider the bare necessities. Even shoes, hats and gloves are a challenge for these kids. The last few nights it has dropped below freezing and these kids showed up without hats, and shoes to our day camp.

If you would like to get involved we are going to be helping with some blankets and shoes. You can donate to the World race ministry fund. Just send in a donation and earmark it for ministry fund. Blankets are about $2.00 and shoes are $7 to $10. Both of these things can change there world in a very real way.
