Here is a question I have been wrestling with… Does God speak through secular song?

What got me thinking more about this was going to a Mumford and Sons concert on Valentines Day with Hugh and his “lady friend”  (loved being the 3rd wheel on a Valentines Day date).

To those of you who don’t know Mumford they are not a Christian group but their lyrics ooze biblical terms, resound as spiritual, but skirt around salvation and Christ as savior.

Their show was amazing! They have practiced their craft as beautiful musicians and entertainers.  The lights were captivating and the lead singer blew my mind with his ability to play a kick drum and guitar at the same time.

It was a great show, but the whole concert I felt uneasy in my spirit.  I felt the Lord calling me to pray through most of the performance.  Primarily for the guy playing the keys and the crowd in attendance.

They were hearing good words about grace, forgiveness, and perseverance.  However, most of their songs seem to be speaking about relationships with women or about something other than a relationship with the Father through Christ.

I wonder, when non-believers hear these songs, is it possible for them to hear God’s voice in it? Or will it only confuse them further about things because the redemptive work of Christ isn’t what is being exalted?

As a believer, I can definitely here God’s voice in secular music.  I am learning He is speaking in all kinds of ways if I will only tune my ears to listen.  But that is because I have this relationship with Him.

I don’t know what God is doing in Mumford.  I hope He reveals Himself to them in an amazing way because with the gifting they have I know He wants to use them to glorify Himself.

What do you think about secular music?  If the band is performing to bring glory to themselves, can God use there gifting’s to bring people to Himself?  Can people not in relationship with Christ possibly hear Gods voice in "the worlds" music?
