As many of you already know, all flights from Thailand’s international airports have been suspended after thousands of anti-government protesters stormed the two main airports in Bangkok. Prior to all airport protests, our flight out of Bangkok was scheduled to leave Wednesday evening. the day after the airport was raided by the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD). Luckily, the news came in plenty of time before we left for the airport. We figured a day setback from Africa would be good down time and more preparation for what was to come. On Wednesday we had hoped to leave by Thursday; but once Thursday came, the Prime Minister had declared a state of emergency and the earliest they predicted we could leave would be after Saturday night. Now it is Saturday night and there is a good chance we aren’t going anywhere for a while (at least not before Monday night). I am convinced the pattern will continue and there is a chance we will be stuck in Bangkok for a while.
The good news is that we have a great place to stay indefinitely with beds, AC, hot water and far away from any riots (
YWAM). We’ve stayed at this YWAM base four seperate times within the last three months, which now gives us a familiar area to spend time (just an inexpensive bus and train ride away from a sweet 7 story mall equipped with a Starbucks, Dunkin’ Donuts, an aquarium, bowling alley and upscale movie theater). Yes, it seems a little prestige for the rough and tough World Racers, but we are very thankful for a break from bucket showers, squatty potties and blood sucking insects.
It did not take long for our squad to place importance on the knowledge that God’s plan was in place here. It was certainly unexpected, but we are open to what He has in store while we continue our stay in Bangkok. In speaking for myself, here are just a few of the many blessings this extended stay has bestowed upon me:
- A much needed hotel “getaway” with Johnny on Thanksgiving.
- A pleasant amount of quality time with my Maker and Creator.
- QT with the squad in good conversation and prayer.
- A squad bowling night (including somewhat out-of-place club style music and dancing with no regard or care to the puzzled expressions upon surrounding Asians).
- Extended time towards blogging, emails, and picture sharing (still working on the blogging though).
Overall, I am excited we are still here in Bangkok and I look forward to more time spent with all of the above. Please pray for the unrest to settle, as well as safety once our journey continues toward Africa.
