Dear America,
We sure have some big changes coming don’t we. In the last year, since I have been gone, you have had new music and movies come out (including several Marvel movies), the news headlines have highlighted the ongoing topic of social justice between the African American community and the Police, a hurricane hit the east coast, states have continued to vote on topics like LGBTQ rights and legalization of Marijuana, Michael Phelps won more gold medals in the Olympics, the Broncos won the Super Bowl and Coldplay did the halftime show, the iPhone 7 was released, and the Cubs won the world series… it’s amazing how much can happen in a year. But I think that the thing that has consistently shown up on my Facebook newsfeed (basically my only source of information these days) is the presidential election…
WAIT…
Please don’t close the page thinking this is just another letter bashing our new president and complaining about the state you are in!!! I promise it isn’t. But it is something important I wanted to write to you about.
America my heart breaks for you… but not because Trump is the new president. I have spent this year praying for you and missing you and loving you from afar, and even though right now I am sad that this adventure must come to an end, I look forward to placing my feet on your soil again, even if only for a time.
I have watched my Facebook feed blow up this year with opinions about who should have won the election. I have seen friendships divided over the issue. I have watched as you have been torn apart and now your people are angry.
It has been difficult to be so far away, watching all of these changes take place from outside your borders. I mean, I didn’t even know who won the election until someone with access to the internet told me. And I have resisted becoming a part of the division that has taken place within your people by contributing to the Facebook posts about who we should or shouldn’t vote for and why. The reality is, we, as your people voted in a new president and we chose who would be the next leader of our nation.
But as I look at our future. At what is ahead. I have nothing but hope. Now don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that I agree with all the policies of our new president, but I know without a doubt that all authority comes from God and that He is sovereign over everything.
So no, I am not angry at you. I am not disappointed in you. I am hopeful.
I hope that Donald Trump surprises us and ends up being a great president.
I hope that he does something great to help our country.
And above all else I hope that we as your people can remember the pillars upon which you were formed. That we are ONE nation, under GOD, INDIVISIBLE, with LIBERTY and JUSTICE for ALL. We are not under only under the authority of our president but we are under the authority of GOD which is much greater than that of any president.
Through watching this election take place from afar, I have learned one very important thing. America, the world is watching YOU! And I truly believe that the way to move forward is to rally together and unite, not for protests or hating on those who voted for our president. But to come together as your people, to pray and to do our part to exemplify the virtues that you stand for, and to trust that no matter who is the president, and no matter what happens that God is going to do a mighty work in you and that His sovereignty will reign forever, no matter what comes your way.
Sincerely,
A Hopeful American Citizen
