Today was the first day of Refilwe day camp!  The camp serves several purposes:  1) to provide healthy activities for area children while school is not in session (teachers are on strike), 2) to create a safe and loving community for children who are directly affected by the AIDS pandemic, poverty, and abuse/neglect, and 3) to bring the hope and freedom of Jesus Christ into the lives of the African youth.

We knew we would be working with the camp, and the staff had prepared the materials and activities in advance.  I spent the last few days reading over the schedule and group leader materials for the Bible lessons, crafts, and games.  This morning, I felt prepared to love on these beautiful children and lead a group in the day’s activities.  I also knew that God’s Love is more powerful than anything I do, or do not, bring to the table.

At the beginning of the day, we expected approximately 100 children, and I expected about ten in my group.  When will I learn to stop expecting things?!?  200 South African kids, aged 3-17 came to Refilwe camp today.  We had prayed for an overwhelming amount of children… and that is what we got!

At one point in the morning, my lesson plans were laying in the dirt where I had thrown them, craft supplies were scattered everywhere, and I was staring at twenty-one 9-year-olds, most of whom speak only Zulu.  I, however, do not speak Zulu… and I have no idea what to do with 21 kids!  I remember praying desperately under my breath “Jesus, help me!”

I am in way over my head.  And I think the Father just loves that.  Like He says, “Look!  Now she knows it’s only Me.  She knows she needs me and that I AM here.  She knows that it is I who will do the transformative and redemptive work.  And just look at her!  She wants to love those kids, and she wants Me to use her as a vessel!”

As our week continues tomorrow, (and I AM getting help from fellow-racer Mark), please pray:

  • That the Spirit of God will work powerfully in the heart’s of these children as they hear the Truth of Christ that saves, redeems, and frees.
  • That hundreds of children will come to know Jesus and begin a personal relationship with Him.
  • That these children will become powerful, personal witnesses of Christ to their families and friends and will be used mightily to build the Kingdom of God.
  • That the racers and other camp staff are able to form genuine friendships with the kids and pour love into their lives.
  • That racers will be sustained and encouraged by the Spirit and each other.

Thank you and, as always, I’m yours for the Journey.
