Since being in Bulgaria we have been working at two homes (orphanages) and putting on a VBS at each place. Last week we took the kids to the pool and spent the day there. On a regular day of VBS our host will read the Bible story, one of us will share our testimony, then we’ll do some crafts, and then play a game.
Last week we realized that some of the girls had a lot of lice. It didn’t seem like anything was being done about getting the lice out, so this week our host got some lice treatment and we’ve been getting the lice out of the girls’ hair. We are hoping that someday next week we can have a lesson with the kids to educate them on how to prevent getting lice. Right now all the girls share the same brush for their hair, and it’s a small plastic brush. One of my teammates had the idea for us to give them all a care package with new hair brushes, shampoo/conditioner, deodorant etc. We did a fundraiser this week to raise money in order to buy all the supplies, and we’ve raised enough money!! It only took a week to raise enough money to get the supplies for the care packages!
For a couple of days this last week we were cleaning up an apartment that will be a home for the boys to move into once they turn 18 and move out of the orphanage home. The first day we took off all the old wallpaper, swept up the cockroaches from the floor and started to paint the ceiling. The plan was to put on new wallpaper the next day and finish painting the ceiling. Well as it turns out, when we painted the ceiling part of the old layer of paint would come off, we don’t know how to put on wallpaper, and by the end of the day we only had half a wall done……out of 4 whole rooms and only one ceiling painted. Our host ended up telling the director that they would need someone with a little more experience to come and put the wallpaper up. We are wanting to keep up the fundraising, but now we’re asking for people to donate money in order to get this apartment up and going. It needs a lot of help, so if you would like to donate then here is my teammate’s PayPal (she will give the money to our host who will give it to the right people):

Last Sunday we went on a hike up to a place called Seven Lakes. It took most of the day and was a pretty steep incline but it was beautiful. I haven’t done a hike like that in a while and I loved it!
We have a little over a week left here before we head to Sofia, Bulgaria for debrief and then on to Africa from there!
Keep the faith,
Malia
