One of my favorite ministries here in Puerto Barrios is going to the local hospital, just a short walk from our house. Jonathan, Sarah and their wonderful daughter Jada are a family here from Florida with the purpose to help Paul with the Radio station. They started visiting the hospital a few weeks before we came and invited us to join them in this ministry. We bring coloring books, crayons and stories for the children. Jada passes out the crayons while others pass out coloring sheets and boards for the kids to color on. I was able to read the story of Jesus to the children the first time we went.
Most of these children have one parent with them at their side, sitting in a very hot hospital room. There are about 8-10 beds in a room with just a simple plastic chair at the bedside for the parent. The schedule of treatments is written and posted upon the head of their bed. I was able to observe one of the nurses doing treatments some of the children. I was just about moved to tears for one little guy who had fallen and some how ended up with a large wound on his ankle. It looked very painful as did the treatment that was required to care for the wound.
I love being able to visit the hospitals because it combines two of my passions: Jesus and nursing. I love being able to pray for those who are sick as the Lord is the true healer!
